  • Sony Falls Silent on Social Media Following Backlash Over Physical Games Decision

Sony has remained largely silent across its official social media channels following its controversial announcement that PlayStation will stop producing disc-based physical games from January 2028.

24 hours after revealing the news, the company’s accounts on all social platforms have seen little to no new activity. This is an unusual move for a platform holder that typically posts daily updates.

The silence is particularly noticeable given that Sony skipped sharing its latest PlayStation Plus Essential lineup on social media. They instead published the announcement exclusively on the PlayStation Blog.

Likewise, a new Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls gameplay trailer posted through the game’s official channels and not on PlayStation’s accounts.

While PlayStation’s YouTube channel has received a handful of uploads, these appear to be pre-scheduled trailers from third-party publishers.

Many of the comments under those videos have shifted focus away from the games themselves. Players are voicing their frustration over the company’s decision to abandon physical game discs.

This isn’t the first time Sony has gone quiet during a period of controversy. Earlier this year, the company stepped away from social media for more than 72 hours following criticism surrounding the closure of Bluepoint Games.

However, the reaction to the physical disc announcements appears to be generating even stronger backlash across the gaming community.

Whether Sony is deliberately avoiding the conversation or simply allowing the news cycle to settle remains unclear. What is evident is that the decision to phase out physical game discs sparked one of the company’s most divisive debates.

Community sentiment shows little sign of cooling down anytime soon.
