Sony has officially confirmed that disc-based physical game releases for PlayStation consoles will come to an end in January 2028. Marking one of the biggest changes in the brand’s history. After that date, all new PlayStation games will be distributed digitally, either through the PlayStation Store or as download codes sold by retailers.

According to the company, discontinuing physical disc production is a natural step that better reflects how the majority of players now buy and access their games.

Interestingly, Grand Theft Auto VI has already set the precedent for this transition. While the game is available in physical packaging, the box contains a digital download code instead of a physical disc. This gives players an early look at what PlayStation’s future releases will look like.

From January 2028 onwards, players will no longer be able to purchase newly released PlayStation games on Blu-ray discs. Whether buying from the PlayStation Store or through a retailer, every new title will be delivered as a digital download.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a high-quality gaming experience despite the shift away from physical media.

The decision isn’t entirely surprising. Sony recently revealed that around 85% of all PlayStation game purchases are now digital. Physical sales continue to decline each year.

The news also follows Sony’s broader push towards digital services. The company has already confirmed that the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in additional regions next year. Players in countries including the United Kingdom and the United States will lose access in July 2027.

This move is likely to divide the PlayStation community. For digital-first gamers, very little will change, but for collectors and those who value physical ownership, January 2028 will mark the end of an era.
