It has been 10 years since No Man’s Sky first launched on PlayStation. Hello Games celebrates a decade of exploration by reflecting on the game’s evolution since 2016.
On August 9, 2016, PlayStation players stepped onto alien planets for the first time. They then explored the vast universe of No Man’s Sky as Hello Games led a remarkable journey afterward. The company continuously expanded the game through more than 40 major updates, all released for free.
From a Rocky Launch to a Massive Universe
Over the past decade, the game has grown far beyond its original concept. Players can now build enormous bases, drive exocraft, establish settlements, pilot mechs, raise pets and even discover living ships. The game has also introduced Expeditions and repeatedly rebuilt and expanded its universe.
Additionally, PlayStation players have gained support for PSVR, PS5 and PSVR2.
According to Hello Games founder Sean Murray, tens of millions of travellers have explored the universe, collectively spending thousands of hours discovering planets and sharing their experiences.

And despite that enormous player activity, there’s still an incredible amount left unexplored: players have discovered less than 1% of the planets.
The No Man’s Sky Journey Isn’t Over
Hello Games says the community’s journey is far from finished. The studio is currently working behind the scenes on its next game, Light No Fire, while also promising “big things” for the future of No Man’s Sky.
Nonetheless No Man’s Sky reaches its 10th anniversary and much of its universe remains untouched, reminding players what made it special.
Ten years later, the universe is still waiting to be explored.
